Again with the hats

November 25, 2011

Today’s winner (yesterday’s winner?) is Sandy! Yay Sandy! I will send you your coupon code shortly. The draw was done by pulling a number out of the mixing bowl of my Kitchenaid. Fun.

Which hat should we talk about today? I keep losing track of which have been discussed and which haven’t. Let’s talk about Lara. First, my friend Lara is a natural model. Pass her a piece of knitwear and grab your camera, and she will toss her head and laugh and pose and make it fun. She modelled my SOS shawl with a moments notice. I like her a lot.

The Lara hat is a variation on the Uncle pattern, which is availble for free on Ravelry. Lara is worked using DK weight yarn, and has a pretty eyelet round just before the bind off which can be used to button up the brim if the ribbing is worked long enough to fold it over. Shown here in Yarn Love Amy March and Three Irish Girls Springvale DK, it’s a cozy and  practical hat. Chose bright and thrilling colours to add life to a classic style.

PS This photo shows the Leanne mitts in action. I like that the tightish spin to the Springvale bulky makes for a smooth fabric, because it doesn’t fill my hair with static electricity when I push it out of my face.

Today’s contest will run until tomorow, at whatever time I remember to check in here. Please comment to tell me whether you prefer the shorter version or Lara or the folded up version.

I like the longer brim–it makes it more versatile!!! And buttons! You can’t go wrong with buttons!

I also like the longer brimmed one for the versatility. Great colors on both, though!

I like the folded up version better, but it might be because I really like the contrast detail on the ribbing. It adds very nice interest to the hat. Though really, those mittens are my favorite because the yarn looks like candy and I want to eat them up.
